Are you curious about Brene Brown but aren’t able to read any of her books? Have you read Brene Brown’s content and want to watch a summary of her shame and vulnerability research? Either way I recommend this special! I recommend either watching it on your own or watching it with a partner and letting the content prompt deeper discussions.

Ava DuVernay uses this documentary to portray the realities of where the US’s prison industry and criminalization history has gone since establishing The 13th Amendment: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.”

Disclosure

Executive producer Laverne Cox creates a depiction of the past 100 years of transgender representation in film. This documentary portrays the realities of discrimination in the trans community and how little can be known about what it means to be trans.

The 1619 Project

This docu-series comes from Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones. It is the media representation of her book The 1619 Project. This series is filled with emotionally charged interviews and accounts which Nikole uses to reframe the US’s history of Black America.
